On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026,
themed “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” the ICAR Research Complex for North
Eastern Hill Region, Umiam, organized a day-long programme emphasizing environmental stewardship,
climate action, and collective responsibility towards building a greener and more sustainable future.
The programme was graced by Shri Hally War,
Padma Shri Awardee 2026 and noted environmentalist, as the Chief Guest. Addressing the participants,
Shri War reflected on his five decades of work in environmental conservation and emphasized the crucial
role of youth in protecting natural resources. He stated that the future of humanity is closely linked to
the health of the environment and urged students to adopt environmentally responsible lifestyles by minimizing
the use of plastics and embracing biodegradable alternatives.

The Guest of Honour, Dr. S. Ashutosh, IFS (Retd.), Co-Chairman & Director, Centre of Excellence (NRM & Sustainable Livelihoods), Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA), Government of Meghalaya, highlighted the need to reaffirm collective commitment towards environmental protection. He emphasized that conserving natural resources is a shared responsibility and noted that Meghalaya is endowed with rich biodiversity, valuable traditional knowledge, abundant rainfall, and fertile soils. He further observed that conservation values are deeply embedded in the daily lives of the people of Meghalaya and stressed that while several government initiatives support environmental conservation, individual actions are equally important in safeguarding nature.
In his address, Dr. G. Kadirvel, Director, ICAR RC NEH, Umiam, emphasized that environmental conservation is fundamental to ensuring a sustainable future. He urged educational institutions to inculcate environmentally responsible habits among students from an early age and stressed the importance of integrating environmental education through both formal and informal learning processes.
Earlier the celebration commenced with a Tree Plantation Drive, underscoring the importance of conserving natural resources and strengthening efforts to combat climate change. The initiative reflected the Institute’s commitment for promoting environmental sustainability and encouraging community participation in conservation activities. As part of the celebration, a series of educational and awareness programmes were organized for school students. The activities included expert lectures, spot slogan writing competitions, extempore speech competitions, and other interactive events aimed at fostering environmental consciousness and inspiring young minds to become responsible custodians of the environment.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Krishnappa R., Sr. Scienitst Investigator, NICRA, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, participants, students, and organizers for their contributions towards the successful conduct of the event.
